PAINT SYSTEM

UNE-EN ISO 12944-6.

March 24, 2025

The UNE-EN ISO 12944 standard establishes requirements for the protection of metals against corrosion by means of paint coating systems. It focuses on the durability of coatings in industrial and marine environments, and specifies suitable painting systems to ensure that metal structures remain protected over time.Happy Holidays from Labencor!

The UNE-EN ISO 12944 standard is fundamental to ensure effective protection of metal structures, ensuring that the correct painting systems are chosen and applied properly to extend the service life of installations in corrosive conditions.

Classification of environments according to UNE-EN ISO 12944-6

The UNE-EN ISO 12944-6 standard provides a detailed technical guide for selecting and applying protective paint systems for steel structures exposed to various environments. The selection of the paint system is based on the corrosivity category of the environment to which the metal structure will be exposed.

The standard classifies environments into different corrosivity categories (C1 to C5), depending on severity), which determines the type of coating system required for each case. For example:

C1: Indoor environments, not aggressive (e.g. offices, homes).

C2: Indoor environments with slight pollution (e.g. warehouses, industrial buildings).

C3: Low-pollution outdoor environments (e.g. urban areas with moderate pollution).

C4: Outdoor environments with high pollution (e.g. industrial areas, coastal zones).

C5: Very corrosive outdoor environments (e.g. heavy corrosion. marine areas, areas with high humidity).

💢Coatings must be subjected to specific tests to determine their corrosion resistance, adhesion, and other factors related to the protection of steel.

💢 These tests include, but are not limited to, adhesion test, moisture test and neutral salt spray test.

In short, the objective of the UNE-EN ISO 12944-6 standard is to ensure effective protection against corrosion over time, minimizing maintenance and extending the service life of structures.
